Game recommendations?

phi zennin shibou desu
Hello! Hopefully someone can help me out. This community has been kind of dead lately, but it's worth a shot.

I'm going for N1 this summer. I doubt I'll pass, but I'm working my ass off studying. I'm doing about half test-specific textbook studying, and half reading/listening materials intended for native speakers. But, stuff like that can get boring when you do it for hours everyday.

So, any game recommendations? Specifically for the DS systems? Currently I'm playing 善人シボウデス, which I'm really liking because it's half-game and half-novel, and many of the dialogs have audio to go with it. I'd like something similar (lots of focus on reading and listening), if anyone knows of anything that sounds like that.

Thanks for any advice, and good luck to anyone else who plans on taking the JLPT this summer :3

well, there are a lot of dengeki bunko for the DS, like 'iria no sora, UFO no natsu', 'baccano' or Inukami. ds games tend to have a lot of gameplay with a lot of reading.

Also, everyone WILL mention this, but DS dating sims. There are a lot of them, but I recommend you to try many until you find one you are comfortable with. rosario to vampire is an interesting title, for example.

oh, there's also a game that is dating sim + tactical game..."Tactics Layer: Ritina Guard Senki"

Oh, thanks! I didn't even think of dating sims. I'll have to see if I can find any of the ones you listed.

Those,I thought they made some original changes for dating sims. Storywise, though, weren't my cup of tea. (but I'm a woman, so that may have something to do :D;; )

some english sites don't even consider them as a genre, so it's sometimes hard to search for.

How about trying love plus? That one got TONS of press... and some marriages...

I actually saw that there's a free demo. I had no idea what it was until a few days ago. I should download the demo version and see how it is :3

I loved playing through all the Phoenix Wright games in Japanese -- not super hard, but generally good reading practice, and funny too. The first three are the best, although all of them are fun to some degree.

I also have a bunch of Professor Layton games, but for some reason I find myself playing that in English instead... maybe I can't solve puzzles and think in Japanese at the same time. ^_^;;

Good luck! I passed the old version of 1kyuu in 2009.

Ah, but I should add that it's pretty much all reading, no listening.

Thanks! Just reading is fine. I've heard the name Phoenix Wright, but... Well, I didn't know anything about it :p

And congrats on 1kyu (you know, way late). I'm kind of kicking myself for not studying earlier, but oh well.

Phoenix Wright is a lawyer game, but don't let that put you off. It has a series of "cases" which are about solving the whodunit puzzle, but there is an overarching storyline tying the characters together that gets really, really good by the third game. (It's good all the way through, but the third one hit it out of the park.)

I should play it again sometime so I can refresh my vocabulary for "gunshot residue" and "blunt object" and the like. ^__^

(Bonus -- the English translation is absolutely hilarious. I recommend playing in Japanese first, then English for maximum amusement.)

Good luck!

I like to play RPGs on my DS :D but there isn't usually much listening in the ones I play, just written words. Still, definitely good practice!

If you want something pretty easy but good for killing time, Tomodachi Collection is fun. It has a lot of good words for food and clothing. Bonus is that they almost always have subtitles when they speak, so you can do listening/reading with it.

Good luck :) I narrowly failed N1 in December and I might try again this summer. You'll probably do better than I did, since I didn't really study a lot (;_;) I hope you pass!!
